The whole trip in detail
Day 1: Edinburgh – Stirling – Aberfoyle, approx. 90 km
Arrive by air, for example with KLM via Amsterdam, to Edinburgh, and pick up your rental car. Start your tour from the airport along the A9 towards Stirling. This is also a good opportunity to get used to driving on the left. Visit Stirling Castle here and the old town of Stirling just below it, gaining a first impression of Scotland’s imposing history.
>> 2 nights in a B&B in Aberfoyle <<
Day 2:
Use today for various excursions, such as a short boat trip on Lake Menteith to Inchmahome Priory (a small church), a walk along Loch Lomond, or a whisky tasting at the Glengoyne Distillery.
Day 3: Aberfoyle – Oban, approx. 130 km

Leave Aberfoyle and drive via Callander (perhaps with a shopping break), Kingshouse (Rob Roy’s grave), past Loch Earn and Tyndrum to Loch Awe. Stop here at Kilchurn Castle. At Taynuilt, leave the main road and drive through the beautiful Glen Lonan to Oban. Take a look around Oban’s fishing harbour, McCaig’s Tower and Dunollie Castle.
>>1 night in a B&B in Oban <<
Day 4: Oban – Fort William – Fort Augustus, approx. 120 km
The area around Oban is dotted with castles. Visit Barcaldine Castle before following the A828 north. On the shore of Loch Linnhe you’ll come across the mystical-looking Castle Stalker. Continue along Loch Linnhe, enjoying the wonderful views of the landscape and, in good visibility, Ben Nevis, Scotland’s highest mountain, all the way to Fort William.

The small town of Fort William is worth a stop for a walk up Ben Nevis, or for a detour to Glenfinnan and the viaduct known from the Harry Potter films, over which the steam train of the Fort William Steam Railway huffs and puffs impressively.
>>1 night in a B&B in Fort Augustus <<
Day 5: Fort Augustus – Beauly, approx. 65 km
First, take a stroll through the pretty town of Fort Augustus. Here, boats from the Caledonian Canal, or Loch Ness, must pass through a five-stage lock to continue their journey. This spectacle always attracts many onlookers.
Leave Fort Augustus along the shore of Loch Ness and keep an eye out for Nessie.

If you have the time and inclination, take an additional detour to Eilean Donan Castle, filming location of the Hollywood production “Highlander” and probably Scotland’s most photographed castle. Otherwise, Urquhart Castle on Loch Ness invites a visit, and the Loch Ness Centre & Exhibition tells you about the legend of the world-famous lake monster.
>> 2 nights in a B&B in Beauly <<
Day 6: Day trip along the west coast, up to approx. 300 km
Take a day trip to Ullapool and drive along the west coast via Gairloch and Applecross back to Beauly.
Day 7: Beauly – Dufftown, approx. 140 km
If you’re interested, join a tour of the beautifully located Glen Ord Whisky Distillery in Muir of Ord before driving on to Inverness. Inverness, the capital of the Highlands, invites you to shop. Grab a light lunch here, then drive to nearby Culloden Moor, the battlefield of Culloden, where on 16 April 1746 the second Jacobite rising met its extremely bloody and inglorious end. The A9 finally takes you to Grantown on Spey, the gateway to the Speyside whisky trail, whose “capital” is Dufftown.

>> 2 nights in a B&B in Dufftown <<
Day 8: On the whisky and castle trail
Here in Speyside, named after the River Spey, the greatest concentration of whisky distilleries in the world is found (more than 50!). You’ll come across famous names like Glenfiddich, The Glenlivet, Macallan, Strathisla and many more. Join a distillery tour, learn the secrets of whisky making, and then stock up a little for cosy evenings at home. Often called Castle Country, north-east Scotland is home to around a thousand castles or castle ruins, with a wealth of stories — from cruel tales of battles to romantic family intrigues.
Day 9: Dufftown – Pitlochry, approx. 140 km
Today the Highland Tourist Route takes you via Tomintoul and Ballater into Deeside to Balmoral Castle, the Queen’s “modest” summer and weekend retreat. Stretch your legs on a walk through its gardens, take a castle tour (if no member of the royal family is present) and refresh yourself at the castle café. Continue south along the Deeside Tourist Route to Pitlochry. Pitlochry was voted Britain’s prettiest town in 2003. Its promenade invites you to shop and relax in pleasant street cafés and restaurants.
>> 1 night in a B&B in Pitlochry <<
Day 10: Pitlochry – Edinburgh, approx. 100 km

From Pitlochry, drive first to Perth. Near Perth, make a detour to Scone Palace, the original coronation palace of the Scottish kings. Here you’ll also find a replica of the Stone of Scone, on which Scottish rulers sat during their coronation ceremony. The English stole the stone in the 14th century and returned it via Elizabeth II in the 1990s. The original is on display at Edinburgh Castle. The M90 takes you directly across the Firth of Forth back to your starting point, Edinburgh.

Kinder sind i. d. R. Vollzahler!
