The whole trip in detail
Day 1: Inverness – Gills Bay, approx. 200 km
Arrive in Inverness, pick up your rental car and head north along the North Coast Tourist Route. Your first typically Scottish experiences await, such as a stop at the Glenmorangie whisky distillery or a visit to Dunrobin Castle & Gardens, with its multi-award-winning falconry display. Beyond Wick, once Scotland’s “herring capital”, civilisation practically seems to end, and you’ll find yourself immersed in genuine solitude.
>> 1 night in/around Gill’s Bay <<
Day 2: Gill’s Bay – St Margaret’s Hope (Orkney)
Take your time over your first Scottish breakfast, then visit the Queen Mother’s favourite castle, Castle of Mey, before crossing to the Orkney Islands in the late morning. There, get your first taste of the Churchill Barriers and discover all about the astonishing craftsmanship of former Italian prisoners of war at the Italian Chapel.
>> 7 nights self-catering in the cottage <<
Day 3: In the footsteps of the Bronze Age and the ancient Celts

Alongside Stonehenge in southern England and the Calanais Standing Stones on the Isle of Lewis, the Ring of Brodgar is regarded as one of the most impressive relics of pre-Christian civilisation. The Brough of Birsay, an Iron Age village, only reveals its secrets at low tide, and the Maeshowe Cairn still leaves archaeologists wondering to this day whether it’s a Neolithic burial chamber or a religious cult site. Today, these and many more messages from long-vanished ages will open up to you.
Day 4: Shopping, sightseeing, or a bit of both
What are you in the mood for today? Would you rather carry on where yesterday left off and keep wandering in the footsteps of the past? Otherwise, Kirkwall and the Orkney Craft Trail also offer plenty of great shopping opportunities for local craftwork, such as striking silver jewellery, gorgeous photography, and jumpers and home accessories made from sheep’s wool.
Day 5: Day trip to the Isle of Hoy

The ferry to Lyness on the island of Hoy departs from Houton at around 10.00am. In Lyness, visit the Scapa Flow Museum on the former British defence base and learn about life and work there during the First and Second World Wars. In the south of the island, you’ll also come across relics of the 19th-century Napoleonic Wars. Afterwards, set off on a walk to the “Old Man of Hoy”, a lonely rock stack and island landmark set against the imposing cliffs to the north. In the late afternoon, the ferry brings you back to Houton. With a bit of luck, you might spot whales or dolphins in Scapa Flow bay during the crossing.
Day 6: On foot through nature
Orkney Mainland has plenty of spots where, on mostly gentle walks over soft grassy ground, you can get to know even more of the island world’s flora and fauna, along with spectacular views and photo opportunities. Along the cliffs, the endearing puffins are certainly among the most sought-after sightings. But watching gulls perform their aerobatics along the cliff faces, or seals gathering for a midday snack in a bay, is an impressive experience too.
Day 7: Scapa Flow and its naval history
Alongside Lyness, the Naval Museum in Stromness lets you explore everything else worth knowing about Scapa Flow – a naturally formed harbour that became Britain’s most important naval base. In the First World War, after the armistice, 74 ships of the German High Seas Fleet were interned at Scapa Flow. There, on 21 June 1919, Rear Admiral Ludwig von Reuter gave the order to scuttle the fleet, assuming that the German government would not accept the Treaty of Versailles, that a state of war would continue, and that the fleet must not fall into British hands. Between 1923 and 1939, most of the wrecks were salvaged, and some of their contents are now on display in the museum in Stromness.
Day 8: Orkney’s northern islands
Today, take a trip to one of Orkney’s many other small islands. The ferry terminal in Kirkwall has all the timetables ready for you. Our tip: Westray! Once you arrive at the harbour in Westray, a small bus takes you to the north of the island, from where we heartily recommend the wonderful walk up to the lighthouse.

Day 9: St Margaret’s Hope – Gills Bay – Inverness, approx. 200 km
In the morning, you’ll cross back to the Scottish mainland. Once back on the mainland, it’s only a short detour to Dunnet Head, the northernmost point of mainland Britain. Afterwards, follow the North Coast Tourist Route back south, and, weather permitting, enjoy the spectacular views along the wonderful coastline. Halfway along, stop off at a site connected to the Highland Clearances and get a sense of how Highlanders were driven from their homeland in the 18th century to the New World.
>> 1 night in Inverness <<
Day 10: Departure
Depending on your flight times, you can spend the morning strolling around the capital of the Highlands, or visit Fort George and Culloden Moor, both on the way to the airport. Return the rental car and fly home.
Price per person in a double room: approx. €2,270 (as of 2025/2026)
