Isle of Harris – Water, mountains, wild animals
The Isle of Harris sets the benchmark for nature in the Outer Hebrides. Outdoor enthusiasts in particular will get their money’s worth here.
Contents: Must-See | all attractions
At its narrow waist, Harris splits into two distinct landscapes: in the north, mountains and valleys dominate, and eagles circle overhead. In the south, the east coast turns into a moorland of many lochs and rocks. The west coast is adorned with the finest sandy beaches of the Outer Hebrides.
Famous, for instance, is Luskentyre beach, which perfectly combines mountains, sea and sand, and which you can photograph beautifully from a viewpoint on the coast road.

Harris offers something especially for people who love heading out into nature, perhaps even taking longer hikes or climbing mountains. The main settlement is Tarbert. The ferries dock there now and then, and there are hotels, cafés, shops and the Isle of Harris Distillery.
Must See: The main attractions on Harris

Beaches
Harris is blessed with sandy beaches set against a mountainous backdrop. Luskentyre and Huisinis are two of the finest.

Harris Tweed
In Tarbert, along the Golden Road and near Leverburgh, there are shops offering clothing and accessories made of tweed.

St Kilda
A (not cheap) trip to the archipelago at the edge of Europe. Impressive wilderness with a magnificent bird life.

Distillery
Whisky and gin at their finest in the main settlement of Tarbert. A tour takes you into the production rooms and offers a few tasting sips along the way.
MY TIP:
The small island of Scalpay is barely known and rarely visited. The short walk to the lighthouse on Eilean Glas is a real pleasure. And at the lighthouse a magnificent view opens up all the way across to the Isle of Skye. It’s also a great spot for whale watching.

MY TIP:
The hike to the North Harris Eagle Observatory follows a good path into Glen Mhiabhaig between high mountains. Regular eagle sightings are indeed possible here – sometimes high up in the sky, sometimes against the rocky flanks of the mountains. But even without eagles, the walk to Loch Scourst is worthwhile.
