They sit right out in the Atlantic, caressed by the warm Gulf Stream – which leaves plenty of possible months to visit. Which ones, you’ll find out here.

The great thing about the Outer Hebrides: they’re largely quite flat. So weather fronts often sweep straight across the island chain without dropping their rain here.

That explains why there’s less rainfall here than on the mainland. Or on the mountainous Isle of Skye.

There’s something else pleasant too: thanks to the Atlantic and a breeze that’s almost always present, at least along the coasts there’s no major problem with Highland midges. So here too you can consider months other than the midge-free May.

In short: the wind off the Atlantic keeps the midges grounded. So May, June and July are pleasant months to visit. But the same still holds true here: the most hours of sunshine and the least rainfall come in May.

That said, it keeps getting steadily warmer through to July, while rainfall stays fairly limited during this period too. The number of hours of sunshine, however, decreases.
