The whole trip in detail

Day 1: Edinburgh-Stirling, approx. 50 km

Start your tour from the airport via the A9 towards Stirling. It’s also a good way to get used to driving on the left. Head straight for Stirling Castle to get your first impression of the imposing Scottish history that was largely written right here. Stirling Castle is noticeably smaller than Edinburgh Castle, but otherwise doesn’t fall short in any way.

Day 2: Stirling-Oban, approx. 140 km

Leave Stirling and drive via Callander to Loch Awe. Stop off here at Kilchurn Castle. The scenery in this area, and along the rest of the route to Oban, is very charming and appealing. In Oban, take a look at the fishing harbour, the Oban Whisky Distillery, McCaig’s Tower, and the ruins of Dunollie Castle, from where you can enjoy a wonderful all-round view.

Day 3: Oban – Fort William – Skye, approx. 220 km

From Oban, the drive continues along Loch Linnhe. Enjoy the wonderful views of the landscape and of Ben Nevis (weather permitting), Scotland’s highest mountain, near Fort William. Leave Fort William heading west and drive via Glenfinnan to Mallaig, from where you’ll take the ferry across to Skye. At Glenfinnan you’ll experience the viaduct of the same name, which serves as a bridge for the Scottish railway and gained worldwide fame as exactly that through the Harry Potter films. The ferry from Mallaig docks at Armadale on the Isle of Skye. Here, the island’s first major attraction awaits you straight away: the Clan Donald Visitor Centre.

Day 4: Isle of Skye

In the north of the island, Dunvegan Castle tells the story of the second great clan on Skye, the MacLeods, and whisky fans will get their money’s worth at the Talisker Whisky Distillery. Skye is an island of artists. Here you’ll find an above-average amount of typically Scottish craftsmanship. The island is especially popular with hikers, thanks to its often rugged, sometimes stark terrain and its wonderful views.

Day 5: Isle of Skye – Fort Augustus, approx. 145 km

The large, elegant bridge over the Inner Sound takes you from Skye to Kyle of Lochalsh. The day’s first highlight won’t keep you waiting long: Eilean Donan Castle. In our own time, the castle became famous again thanks to the 1980s Hollywood production “Highlander” with Christopher Lambert. Its first significant mention dates back to the start of the first Jacobite Rising in the 18th century.

Day 6: Fort Augustus-Pitlochry, approx. 140 km

Start the day with a stroll through the pretty village of Fort Augustus. Here, ships heading from Loch Ness into the Caledonian Canal (and of course the other way round too) are guided through a five-step lock, which always draws plenty of onlookers. Passing the beautiful scenery of Loch Lochy, you’ll reach Dalwhinnie via Fort William, where you again have the chance to visit the whisky distillery of the same name. Pitlochry was voted Britain’s prettiest town in 2003. Its main street invites you to shop and relax in its lovely street cafés and restaurants.

Day 7: Pitlochry and surroundings

Alongside plenty of culture, the Highlands also have plenty of nature on offer. In the morning, get a feel for Scotland’s flora, fauna and wildlife on a 2.5-hour mountain Land Rover safari through one of Europe’s last wildernesses, the Perthshire Estate. You’ll be accompanied by an experienced, kilt-clad ranger who’ll tell you everything worth knowing (in English). He’ll know best where you’re most likely to spot the majestic red deer, the shy mountain hare, and the mighty golden eagle (a sighting can’t be guaranteed!).
Near Pitlochry lies Scotland’s smallest distillery, Edradour. Stop in there for a wee dram in the (late) afternoon.

Day 8: Pitlochry-Edinburgh, approx. 110 km

Say goodbye to Pitlochry and drive to Perth. Near Perth, it’s worth taking a detour to Scone Palace, the original coronation site of the Scottish kings. Here you’ll also find a replica of the Stone of Scone, on which Scotland’s rulers once sat during their coronation ceremonies. The original is on display at Edinburgh Castle. The M90 takes you directly across the Firth of Forth back to your starting point, Edinburgh.

Day 9: Edinburgh

On your last day, explore Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh. Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile and Princes Street Gardens are all waiting to be discovered.

Day 10: Journey home

Return the rental car and fly home.

Wir können Frau Lecon für die Planung und Durchführung einer Schottland-Reise aus vollem Herzen empfehlen. Frau Lecon war von Beginn der Reiseplanung an absolut präsent, offen für unsere Ideen und immer erreichtbar (auch während unserer Reise). Die von ihr empfohlenen Unterkünfte waren nahezu alle ein Volltreffer, die ausgearbeitete Route enthielt viele schöne Impulse. Wir würden hier wieder buchen und Schottland hat drei neue Fans. Vielen Dank für die tolle Zusammenstellung unserer Reise und die vielen Ideen für Aktivitäten vor Ort. Die Unterkünfte waren sehr gut und wir waren sehr zufrieden. Schon bei unserem ersten Kontakt hat Frau Lecon verstanden auf was wir Wert legen und wie wir unseren Urlaub gestalten wollen - das haben wir so selten erlebt. Auf unsere vielen Rückfragen wurde uns immer umgehend  und detailliert geantwortet.

Stephan Goldmann hat einen sehr detaillierten Reiseführer mit vielen Bildern über die Orkney Inseln geschrieben. Man spürt so richtig seine Leidenschaft und für diese Gegend, die Landschaft, Kultur und Geschichte, Menschenund Tiere. Ein sehr netter Shop, als mein bestellter Reiseführer auf sich warten ließ, war der Anbieter sehr freundlich und entgegenkommend, hätte auch notfalls den Reiseführer nochmals geschickt. Für alle die aus Österreich bestellen, sei gesagt unsere Post ist sehr langsam und man muss seine 10 bis 12 Tage rechnen. Aber der Reiseführer ist es wert! Ich folge euch seit ca. 2Jahren auf deiner Internetseite und liebe es einfach...Dickes dickes Lob für so viele Infos und Danke für die Liebe die ihr in das Ganze reinsteckst. Eure Bücher sind mega toll und haben uns auch schon sehr bei dem Planen unserer eigenen Reisen geholfen. Auch die Podcast kann ich wirklich nur weiterempfehlen  - selbst bei mir Geschichtsmuffel hat es die Neugierde und das Intresse auf mehr geweckt.
