Ferry to Scotland from Europe: Best Routes by Car and Motorhome

Planning a ferry to Scotland from continental Europe? This guide compares the most practical routes for cars, motorbikes and motorhomes, including crossing times, onward drives, pet options, sample prices and booking tips.

Ferry routes to Scotland from Europe compared

Times are approximate and exclude check-in, breaks, traffic and delays. Check current timetables and pet rules before booking. (*) Affiliate link.

Currently, no ferry runs directly from continental Europe to Scotland. For many European travellers, the Amsterdam (IJmuiden)–Newcastle ferry offers the best balance: it avoids the very long drive through southern England, and Edinburgh is around two and a half hours from the terminal.

A direct passenger ferry between mainland Europe and Scotland is not currently available. Plans for a freight and passenger route between Dunkirk and Rosyth, near Edinburgh, remain under discussion. In March 2026, the UK government announced funding for border and customs infrastructure, subject to a commercial agreement and approval of the business case. No confirmed launch date or booking option has been announced.

An alternative is the crossing from Rotterdam to Hull. From Hull, allow roughly 4.5 to 5 hours to Edinburgh. The sea crossing is shorter than Amsterdam–Newcastle, which may suit travellers who prefer less time at sea.

If you’d rather cross England on your way instead, you can also sail from Calais in France to Dover or from Dunkirk in France to Dover. From there it’s seven to eight hours to the Scottish border – without a break.

Below are four sample calculations for price and duration on car ferries to Scotland. In each case I booked for two people in the booking mask and, where needed/possible, the cheapest cabin for two weeks in August, specifying different vehicle types. I skipped meal plans. All prices are lightly rounded.

Please note carefully: These are genuinely just examples! Special offers and tariff changes happen all the time, so check for yourself if in doubt. As a rule: the earlier you book, the less you pay. It’s often worth booking ferry passages as much as six months in advance, not least because Scotland is such a popular destination.

Scotland ferry Amsterdam (IJmuiden) – Newcastle

Advantage: Newcastle is comparatively close to Scotland, with Edinburgh around 2.5 hours away by car.

Disadvantage: A long time at sea

• from Amsterdam at 17:30, arriving Newcastle 09:15 the next day
• from Newcastle at 17:00, arriving Amsterdam 09:45 the next day

Check-in/check-out: up to 45 minutes before departure at the latest, and from 45 minutes after docking at the earliest
Crossing time: around 16 hours

For a standard car with an inside cabin with a small double bed, the example comes to 1,031 euros. For a motorhome, however, the price in the example climbs to 1,933 euros.

Breakdown:

• approx. 520 euros inside cabin, small double bed PLUS, respectively:
  • approx. 320 euros for one (!) motorbike, 20 euros EHS surcharge
  • approx. 460 euros for a car, 50 euros EHS surcharge
  • approx. 1,330 euros for a standard motorhome <10 metres long, 80 euros EHS surcharge
• Alternatively: approx. 460 euros for an inside cabin, bunk bed

On top of that come possible costs for meals (dinner and breakfast buffet together approx. 46 euros per person) and other extras. The earlier you book, the cheaper it usually is.

NOTE: DFDS offers a 15 percent early-booking discount. It applies to all trips throughout 2026 when booked at least 90 days in advance, and is normally available until early March. For example here.

With the early-booking discount, the trip for two people with a car would cost only 883.85 euros instead of 1,031 euros. The motorhome example would come to 1,655.05 euros, and two people with one (!) motorbike would pay 736.55 euros.

Scotland ferry Rotterdam – Hull

Advantage: Less time at sea, cheaper ticket price
Disadvantage: Further from Scotland

Operator: P&O Ferries

Departures:

• from Rotterdam Mon-Fri 21:00, Sat & Sun 20:30, arriving Hull 08:00
• from Hull 20:30, arriving Rotterdam 08:30

Check-in: up to 90 minutes before departure at the latest
Crossing time: around eleven hours

On top of that come possible costs for meals.

Here too it’s worth booking early, since the Early Booking Offer saves further. With a car you’d then pay 704.80 euros, with a motorbike 590.90 euros. The motorhome would then cost just 743.90 euros.

Customers may also find the “Book with Confidence” promotion of interest, through which P&O aims to offer more booking security.

Scotland ferry Calais – Dover

Advantage: Only 1.5 hours at sea, cheaper ticket price
Disadvantage: It’s 7-8 hours by car to the Scottish border.

Check-in: check-in closes 45 minutes before departure

For this, the “Flexible & Good” and “Standard” tickets without extras were selected respectively.

Departures:

Check-in: check-in closes 45 minutes before departure

• 144 euros, round trip, motorbike

For this, the Economy tickets without extras were selected, each for a Saturday at 12 noon. Same prices as the ferry from Dunkirk.

Scotland ferry Dunkirk – Rosyth

Still at the planning stage: there is no confirmed launch date or booking option for Dunkirk–Rosyth.

Potential advantage: a direct arrival in Scotland near Edinburgh
Current limitation: the route is not yet bookable and has no confirmed start date.

Scotland ferry Dunkirk – Dover

Advantage: Only two hours at sea, cheaper ticket price
Disadvantage: Route starts in France, so it’s further away

Other options

Here are a few more possible connections, though all of them dock in southern England and are less practical because of the long drive to Scotland afterwards:

No longer active ferry routes to Scotland

The former continental ferry to Rosyth near Edinburgh no longer operates. A new Dunkirk–Rosyth passenger and freight service is being explored, but it remains dependent on commercial agreements and approvals. Travellers should plan with one of the active routes above until a timetable and bookings are officially published.

The Cuxhaven to Harwich ferry run by DFDS Seaways, listed on some websites, was already discontinued back in 2005. I also haven’t been able to find any trace of a Rotterdam to Newcastle ferry link.

Sadly, the Esbjerg (Denmark) to Harwich route was also discontinued on 29 September 2014.

Operator MyFerryLink has been out of business since 2015.
